SAN ANTONIO - A rescue organization inundated with animals suffering because of the drought is getting creative for its upcoming fundraiser. The animals Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation has nursed back to health are creating works of art to raise money for the organization.
The first ever "Artistic Animals" fundraiser earlier this month was so popular, organization employees decided to have an encore show. The first show sold out in 20 minutes.
Domestic and wild animals have been playing with non-toxic paint to create 41 pieces of art. The animals are attracted to the smell and texture of the paint, explained supervisor Kimberly Stephens. She said it's an "enrichment" activity that the animals enjoy while they are in captivity.
The organization rescues and nurses the animals back to health. Animals that are capable of living freely in the wild are released once healthy and those that aren't are kept at a sanctuary outside Kendalia. The organization has a few domestic cats available for adoption at their San Antonio facility.
The art show Saturday has pieces ranging from $35 to $150 and comes with a picture of the animal that created the piece. If you adopt a cat, you can take home one of their art creations for free.
The Artistic Animals event is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at WRR's San Antonio location at 137 Earl St. For more information about the event or WRR, click here.
