Tony Burbeck of WCNC for NBC News Channel:

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control, in North Carolina, mistakenly euthanized a family's dogs and is now conducting an internal investigation to figure out what went wrong.

"They just murdered my dogs for no reason," said Will Harlee.

Harlee has several pictures and videotapes of his dogs Ralow and Deuce. In one videotape, Ralow is wrestling with Harlee on a bed. In another video, Ralow is playing with Harlee's infant daughter.

Ralow, a 9-year-old pit bull mix, loved sleeping on pillows.

"Prettiest dog you'd ever see," said Harlee.

A picture of Deuce shows Harlee's son riding on the pit bull's back.

"He would even let the kids walk him," Harlee said.

They were family.

"They were just like two kids. They just wanted to play," Harlee said.

Ralow and Deuce crawled through a hole in their fenced backyard last week and wandered away. Animal Care and Control picked them up.

Ralow got loose years ago and had a hold on him if found again, Animal Care and Control officials said.

Animal Care and Control paperwork says Harlee could get his dogs back once he fixed the fence. Harlee made the repairs. But when he arrived at Animal Care and Control, he found out the dogs were dead.

"'I'm sorry Mr. Harlee, but your dogs have been euthanized,'" Harlee said, recalling what he was told.

Animal Care and Control apologized. Harlee said employees told him, "It's a mistake. No one knows what happened."

Harlee said he cried in front of his children, who still thought Ralow and Deuce were alive.

"I couldn't even open the door," he said.

Now, Harlee says Animal Care and Control needs to be held accountable for its mistake, and he still has questions without answers.

"I need to know why and who," he said. "I want somebody to lose their job over this. I need an impression that this can't happen to anybody else."

"We're going to look at things very carefully because it does concern us and it's not something we're going to sweep under the rug," said Melissa Knicely with Animal Care and Control. "So it's important to us to make sure things are handled properly."

Animal Care and Control says it didn't hear from the Harlees for a couple of days and say the fence wasn't fixed when they stopped by. Harlee says he didn't fix it immediately because it was raining.

Animal Care and Control says it's working on better communication.

By chance was one of the dog's named Officer Craig Nash? This could be a happy ending if it was.

I will guarantee that no one gets fired for this horrible mistake as they will never find out what really happened. What a heart breaking thing to have happen. My heart felt sympathies go out to this family.

You folks are funny.

Oh please people don't let Torino get to you. He just posts that garbage to get a rise. This forum is his only friend in the world. As for who's fault it is....simple, it is the shelters. Dogs sometimes get loose and the shelter is there to house them, not kill them. The owner said the fence hadn't been fixed because it was raining that day. Now had the owner known they were going to kill his dogs I bet he would have fixed the fence immediately. The shelter messed up, admitted they messed up and will more than likely fire a few people. Had it been my dogs someone getting fired wouldn't be enough. I have more compassion for animals then I do most humans.

ALL OF YO MAKE ME SICK. MY DOGS ARE JUST LIKE MY CHILDREN.... YOU CAN NOT REPLACE AN ANIMAL THAT HAS BEEN WITH YOU FOR SO LONG AND BEEN THROUGH LIFE'S TROUBLES WITH YOU. SOME PEOPLE HAVE NO HEART.... AS FOR THE FAMILY OF THE DOGS MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU AND I HOPE THAT YOU GET JUSTICE SOMEWHERE.

Some people are so overwhelmed by their everyday lives that they cannot place love or endearment on another living thing. They do not understand the link that is made between a human and its dog, cat, bird, or even gerbil. They keep their distance and regard such pets as property and therefore disposable and easily replaceable. To pity them would be gran, but sometimes you just have to let sleeping dogs lie; its not worth the effort. This is a sorrowful story, one I would not want to be in. As for leaving the dogs at the pound, as I understand it, the dogs were picked up, not left, and unable to be returned until the fence was fixed. So the pound was negligent in their care/safety.

what a shame they didn't put gran torino to sleep. i have six dogs and they are just like my children. in my opinion anyone with an attitude like gt would do this planet a huge favor if they would jump off a tall bldg. my only regret would be that the law would not allow me to cause the same outcome with my fists
