SAN ANTONIO-- Probationary teachers hired after the beginning of the school year will keep their jobs in the North East Independent School District.

Eighty-nine people could have lost their jobs because of the state budget shortfall.  However, the school board voted to save the jobs and use other cost-cutting measures to keep them on staff.

The board will use about $30 million of its reserve fund to boost their budget for the next two years. Sixty-nine administrative positions will be eliminated at the central office and at campuses across the district. Administrators will also be furloughed for at least two days to save money.

The district is preparing to slash $55.8 million, about 12%, from its budget.  Superintendent Dr. Richard Middleton said North East ISD is facing steeper cuts than other local districts because of the wealth to pupil ratio.

Monday was also Middleton's last regular board meeting as superintendent before he retires.

"The board will use about $30 million of its reserve fund to boost their budget for the next two years." So one has to wonder what kind of reserve funds NISD and the others may have to "dip into". With a 30 million dollar surplus how loud were the NEISD administrators yelling for Perry to dip into the states "rainy day" fund? The ISD administrators are just as crooked as the politicians in Austin and Washington.

What a novel idea cutting the administration first somebody finally got there head out of the sand. Most of them are useless just collecting a paycheck.

It was just a ploy to get MORE money because government entities NEVER want to CUT anything

BackTo, if you have any friends or relatives who teach, I suggest you ask them what cost cuts have taken place. Ask them how many new teachers are hired, how many were encouraged to retire early, how many more were fired, how many non-teaching positions and programs were eliminated. This was not some hoax.

Anytime you hear that budget cuts will spell disaster, don't believe it. Every single Govt entity needs to learn to do more with less.

The scare tactics were nothing more than a pack of lies.
