SAN ANTONIO -- Local arson teams and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives have launched an investigation to try to determine whether or not a fire that destroyed a historic East Side church was deliberately set.
The Childress Memorial Church of God in Christ, located at the corner of Pine Street and Hays Street, caught fire around 1:00 a.m. Saturday. The structure was built back in 1908, and the loss of the church has left many in the East Side community devastated.
The community was already reeling from a rash of fires in the area that are still under investigation.
Agents with the ATF were at the church Monday morning looking over the damage in an effort to determine what caused the fire.
