SAN ANTONIO -- Five women have been attacked on the Northwest Side in the last few weeks. Police have noticed similarities in the reported attacks and are now trying to determine if the women were all attacked by the same man.

The attacks happened between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. in the area near IH 10 west, north of loop 410 and south of Huebner Road. The women were attacked outside their apartments or cars, and all of them told police their attacker threatened them with a gun and demanded their purses. In the reports, the man was sexually explicit and demanded they perform sexual acts. In one case, he held a woman to the ground by her neck then sexually assaulted her.

Luz Cardenas, who lives in an apartment in the area, says she has enjoyed living there because she has always felt safe. Now, she's worried and nervous.

“I've lived in this area for the past 4 years, and I've never had any problems of any kind," said Cardenas. "Maybe I should be more careful. I never really think about it. But, definitely, something to think about now.”

The victims described their attacker as a white or Latin man who is 5' 08” to 6' 00" tall. In one of the attacks, the woman described a man wearing a ski mask. Police still aren't ready to say if it's the same man.

Police are advising women to be extra cautious and be aware of their surroundings. CLICK HERE to read SAPD's personal safety tips.

Javelina--your laughter, your language, your lack of compassion, and your ill-informed, self-righteous judgment of these victims is all the evidence of your lack of morals anyone needs.

For all of you that took exception to what I previously stated........I stated that it is a terrible thing and inferred that it should not be happening.......on the other hand, I would use the analogy of jumping into a body of water where there is a known rogue man eating shark.........we all agree that the shark is the problem and not the swimmer, but until that shark is caught and eliminated those of us with common sense don't enter the water while the shark is around.......so, same thing here, use your thick heads and don't go out if the turd has not been identified and caught and if you do, you are on your own sweetheart! Oh yea, I could not stop laughing with the comment to me "to get my priorities and morals straight"......where did that come from? If you need to be out in that area for a job, etc., again, as I said, so be it.......but in that case have someone escort you out.

Javelina I work full time and am a mother of two. The only time I have to go exercise is during that time frame. I go to a gym in that area and get there about 4am. I watch my surroundings, but I should be able to go exercise and not have to worry about some crazy guy attacking me as I am going into the gym. The attacker is the problem here, not those of us who are out at that time.

Javelina, you are casting your judgment in the wrong direction. The 'wrong choice' is being made by the attacker, not the victims. I'm getting pretty tired of useless people blaming the victim rather than the perpetrator. Get your priorities, and morals, straight, please.

Javalina - you are making far too much out of the 2 a.m. time-frame. Many people work at bars or restaurants in the area and are leaving work at that time; others are out and about in the early pre-dawn (5 a.m.) going to work, and some are using public transit and are having to wait at those dark bus stops. This area of town is pretty active 24/7, and this attacker is active in a busy feeding area. Not only the Medical Center (and associated support area - 24 hour pharmacies) but USAA is located in this area and keep in mind that the Medical Center isn't just a group of hospitals; University Hospital is a medical school so we have lots of people going to and from the area at all hours.

Gnaeus is one of those people who tries to say something smart and just looks plain fn stupid saying them...How can you say not to worry about Pre-K?First off,the people in San Antonio vary greatly and it's as easy as saying what part of town you live in.Secondly,i'm sure Castro is trying his best to do away with crime but how do you do that when the Southside and Eastside of San Antonio provides a breeding ground for ciminals. This starts with the parents. And FYI,public schools are PAID FOR BY TAXPAYERS!
