BOERNE, Texas - Animal welfare groups rescued 31 Basset Hounds Tuesday from an elderly Sabinal couple who was breeding the dogs.

Sandee Bowman, founder of the Animal Welfare Society of Bandera County, said the couple was dealing with health problems and facing foreclosure next month.  They called for the organization's help last week.  She said 18 dogs had already been placed with other breeders around the state.

Volunteers brought the dogs to the Hill Country Animal League office in Boerne to get checked out by a veterinarian, and rescue organizations were on hand to select the dogs they were taking in.  Groups from as far as New York and Iowa took some of the dogs to find them new homes.

"It's remarkable to me to have 31 dogs come from one facility to be in what appears to be good general health," Dr. Darr Wilson said, as he examined the animals.

Some dogs had cataracts or "cherry eyes"and most had bad dental hygiene, he said.  Each will be vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.

Bowman said the couple had American Kennel Club papers for every dog and knew the bloodlines and names for each one.

"When you have puppies, you find one or two out of a litter that you love. Then you look around one day and it's like, 'oh my goodness, I have 20. I have 30.' It's very difficult not to do those things," she explained.

Bowman encouraged pet owners to spay or neuter their animals to avoid situations like this.  She said the organizations that took the dogs could use donations to pay for the medical and transportation costs for the dogs.  The dogs will be available for adoption once they are all treated by a vet.

If you'd like to make a donation or adopt a dog, call (830) 751-2595 for more information.

Thank you basset rescue. I am a citizen in sabinal (uvalde county) and I would just like to say there are no resources in this county to deal with things concerning pets that need a home if you try and call the no kill shelter noone answeres they have a small cage wrapped in plastic to place unwated pets in, what if there already an animal in the cage what do you do then? if you want the animal control officer come get a stray from our rural community you are out of luck they dont leave uvalde city limits. I think its a shame that other counties have to come out here to get unwanted pets. I live in a rural area and have about 30 feral cats that roam arround out here and cant get any help with them, believe me ive tryed every where kudosto you basset rescue and kudos to that couple they did the right thing and shouldnt be chastized for thier efforts just chalk me up as a concerned flustrated sabinal citizen

First off, let me say thank you BassetRescue for your efforts in this situation, and in the case of animal welfare in general. I support animal adoption, and have two "rescues" myself. My issue however was with the way the headline on this story reads. It villainizes the elderly couple, when as the story reads, they were the ones that reached out for assistance. The title gives the impression that the rescue groups swept in against the breeders wishes and took the animals by force. I'm sure there were costs involved in the treatment of these animals. The story reports that several of the dogs had issues with their eyes. Maybe there was more that was not reported. Considering the conditions that many dogs are kept in at some "puppy mills", it sounds as if things could have been much worse. To other readers out there - before you go to a local pet store and pay a thousand dollars or more for a puppy mill dog, please consider adopting from one of the local pet shelters. They have puppies... they have dogs that are "full blood" and sometimes AKC registered (as these bassets are)... these dogs are just as full of love as any you will find at a "Pets-R-Us", and they need YOU!

Obviously not, you should have seen my rescue groups vet bill for 5 of them!

The title sounds a bit over-dramatic to me... sounds as if the elderly couple were taking fairly good care of their animals
