SAN ANTONIO- Some 250 acres have been scorched in South Bexar County right near the Atascosa County line. The fire ignited early Monday afternoon near Pleasanton Road and Big Leaf Road.
It led to the evacuation of dozens of people living there. As a result at least 40 people stayed overnight at South Side ISD Ninth Grade Academy that served as an evacuation shelter.
As the fire creped into back yards, homeowners desperately tried to keep the flames away from their homes. They sprayed water with a simple garden hose and threw dirt on the flames.
Bexar County Fire Marshall, Craig Roberts said it's still not known what caused the massive brush fire.
“No telling at this point. All we know is we did have winds gusting up to 50 miles an hour and those winds contributed significantly to the spread of these fires,” explained Roberts.
He said one structure burned, but he could not confirm whether it was someone's home, a shed, or a building.
No injuries were reported.
