SAN ANTONIO -- A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a deadly carjacking.

The teen has been charged with capital murder for the shooting death of 18-year-old Christopher Hinojos. Hinojost was killed Tuesday night outside a home on Allendale Oak, near UTSA.

During a news conference Friday afternoon, San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus said the 16-year-old was one of six teens arrested Thursday after a "crime spree" on Bandera Road. McManus said the group was involved in several robberies and led police on a short chase before they abandoned their vehicle and tried to get away on foot. All six were captured after police used canines and a helicopter to help track them down.

One of the officers was assaulted by one of the suspects, who McManus said even tried to gouge out the officer's eyes. McManus said following the arrests, robbery and homicide detectives were able to determine the 16-year-old suspect who assaulted the officer was also the prime suspect in murder of Christopher Hinojos.

Detectives have now recovered what McManus said are key pieces of evidence, including Hinojos' vehicle and the gun police believe was used to kill him. McManus said investigators believe Hinojos and the teen knew each other and that the shooting was not a random act.

None of the suspects are connected to UTSA, but McManus said they do live in the area. McManus was asked if he thought the arrests would help get a handle on some of the problems that have been going on in the area.

"I do," McManus said. "You know, you don't wake up one morning and commit a murder. These individuals we believe are involved in not just robberies but burglaries as well. Vehicle burglaries that occur at night in the area and other activities. These are not, this is not the first go-around, we believe, for this group of individuals."

The 16-year-old was only one of the group charged in connection with Hinojos' murder. McManus said it will be up to the District Attorney to determine whether or not to charge the teen as an adult.

There's too many 15 and 16 year olds getting treated like they're babies by unwitting parents of their friends, not knowing a lot of teens are selling drugs, stealing, committing crimes, just blowing it off. There has to be tougher punishments when it comes to the smaller stuff like drug dealing in public schools starting in middle schools, before the usual pattern of escalation kicks in and they commit more heinous crimes like this kind of thing. Public schools are full of criminals and just because they're 16 or 14 doesn't mean they should just get away with things until they're 18 or commit murder.

I'm getting tired of hearing about things like this. Is it because Susan Reed is getting soft? Is it because there was no Pre-K for SA? Did the gun do it and the kids just happen to be the one holding it at the time? Maybe they are just mis-understood. Fry them all. I'll ponder the reason after they are pushing up grass from six feet under. If you take someone's life, your's should be forfeited. Get the court system moving again. There is no deterent if it takes years to put an animal down for his crimes.

Gecko - you did say that with your tongue in your cheek, right? PreK doesn't prevent anything, much less murder.

Now if only this teenager would have been given a free pre-k education this would have never occurred.

Do forget to arrest the parents as they are the real problem behind these children's behavior. I can remember when living around UTSA and going to school there was a wonderful experience. However, it appears that the area has become as crappy and dangerous as the rest of San Antonio. Do something about this Mayor Castro, instead of using the mayor's office to further your own career!!

Heck yes charge his behind as an adult...and the same should go for his equally brilliant and upstanding friends. You want to act like a "big man" and engage in that lifestyle then you can face the same consequences as a "big man."

That POS punk will probably serve very little time. He will get plead out to a lesser offense and will be out in a couple of years. He deserves the death penalty and nothing less. I find it truly amazing how people out there always have to throw in the race card into such a tragedy. Criminals have to be eradicated no matter what color they are.
