I've driven through a lot of states. In some I've noticed signs along the highways that read "Emergency stopping only". In Memphis I remember signs that said to pull completely off of the highway after an accident if the car was not completely disabled. These things might not be law here in Texas, but they are words to live by. And JJTX99 is right, even with everyone driving like they are supposed to, you are only a couple of feet away from certain death if you're on the side of the road. All it takes is for one person to swerve a little bit (like everyone does at some point), and then you are a road waffle. Keep a folding chair with you so you can sit some distance away from a disabled vehicle. If your tire goes flat, slow down and get off at the nearest exit. Don't stop on the side of the highway if at all possible. An extra $100 for a new rim is well worth the expense.

Yet another example of why you never-ever stop on the shoulder of the road if your car will still move on it's own. If it does, and you arent on a bridge of course, get out of it and sit on the grass away from it, behind a solid object. You are only INCHES from certain injury or death at the hand of someone doing everything but driving.
