SAN ANTONIO -- A woman died after she crashed her van into a tree in the Medical Center area Wednesday morning.

The accident happened just before 8:00 a.m. Wednesday in the 2600 block of Babcock Road. Police say 47-year-old Kirsten Michelle Walker, who was diabetic, was driving west on Babcock when she lost control of her Ford Windstar. The van traveled across traffic, over the sidewalk, and crashed into a tree in a field. Walker's 10-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the van, told police her mom had started feeling sick shortly before the accident.

Walker died at the scene. Her daughter was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Oh my god. I'm so sorry! my prayers go out to their family. I went to elementary school with one of Michelle's daughters... I lost my mother a few years back so to Kirsten and her sister I understand. I hope to see both of you in high school... God is watching over you with your mother at his side.

Definitely horrible and tragic, rhancox knows what they are talking about. I've ended up on a far side of town pulled over with no clue how I got there. I wish her daughter the best as hypoglycemic people are not always receptive to help. Prayers to all.

Tragic. The woman probably took her insulin before she left the house and thought she'd have enough time to make it work and then eat something. Blood sugar can be a tricky thing. Don't ever underestimate it. The normal range is 90-120. If it's double the normal high, you might not feel your best or you might not even notice, but let it get half it's normal low and you're not far from being unconscious, if you're not already. If it's at 50 and you start feeling the effects, just a drop of 10 pts could be disastrous. And that might only take 10-15 mins. I've seen too many friends let themselves "crash" because they didn't eat quick enough after taking their insulin. This may have been the mistake that cost this poor woman her life.
