SAN ANTONIO -- Vandals damaged a statue at a Catholic Church on the South Side.

Members of Saint Henry’s Catholic Church on south Flores are disturbed a sacred statue of Jesus was defaced. Father Bob Hogan believes vandals used a heavy hole cover to a city water line to knock off the head and arm of the statue.

An employee at St. Henry's Catholic Church's Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal on South Flores told us someone knocked off the head of the statue Sunday night. The head was found behind the statue.

This is heartbreaking to Father Hogan and members of the center who say they cherish this spiritual statue which was a gift to the church from the community.

“All this area was built through donations of people. It makes me sad that someone has anger or they just want to do something to be destructive,” said Father Hogan.

Police are still searching for the vandals.  They're hoping someone will come forward with information.  Father Hogan hopes they can get enough funds gathered to get the statue repaired.

If you have any information about damage, please contact Crime Stoppers at 224-STOP (7867), submit a tip online, or text a tip by texting "Tip 127" plus your tip to CRIMES (274637).

Both God and the law shall punish these vandals for this heinous act. Art (statues, paintings, etc.) of our Lord and Savior does Him honor, as it shows our faith in Him, and our gratitude towards Him dying for our sins. Amen, bornagain2! Well said.

No matter what you may want to believe about the Catholic faith, it was still wrong for anyone to destroy the church's property. What gives people the right to damage things like this? I would love to see what some punk would do if the tables were turned and their house was targeted for graffiti or other vandalism. I bet the odds it wouldn't go over too well. I hope the church is able to fix the damage.

I believe we must refer to the Second Commandment of God, delivered to Moses and related in Exodus, Chapter 20. In this set of instructions we find that the building of graven images is strictly forbidden. A statue of Jesus is anathema to God, as it is a graven image and He has specifically forbidden them. That statue may have been destroyed by some of God's angels or possibly by a bolt of lightning. It is difficult to know exactly.

SATXLady, while i agree with you that it's just cement, it meant something to the people at the church. just because it may not mean anything to you, doesn't mean it's ok for someone to destroy. it's just disrespect of others' property...it's rampant in this city

It's just cement. Cement it back on. Im sure these cement statue worshipers will still worship it. The city needs to find real be-headers of humans.
