NELSPRUIT, South Africa -- A UTSA student was mauled by chimpanzees while at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in South Africa.

UTSA officials confirmed 26-year-old Andrew Oberle, a graduate student studying anthropology, "sustained serious injuries" during the attack, which reports say happened Thursday night. A family member of one of Oberle's friends said he was at the facility doing research for his masters degree.

A South African news source reports that two chimpanzees grabbed Oberle and pulled him underneath a damaged fence into an enclosure and then launched their attack. The report states the chimps bit off his ear and parts of fingers and toes, and that he also suffered "a partially amputated ankle, lacerations to the head, throat, chest, legs and groin."

Oberle's friends have set up a donation account for his family to help with expenses.

Take care not to provide sustenance for those who feed off others. Stay as high as possible on the food chain.

Not sure I understand “preventable” @guest26. Yes, he could have stayed in San Antonio. Yes, he could have kept out of reach. The world is full of “would-a-could-a-should-a” but nevertheless it doesn’t lessen the tragedy of this young man’s situation. My prayers are with him and his family.
