SAN ANTONIO - A UTSA graduate student who was attacked by two chimpanzees at an animal sanctuary in South Africa has lost his ears, an arm and all of his toes in the attack.

Andrew Oberle, 26, underwent six more hours of surgery on Sunday. He also has extensive injuries to the skin on his remaining arm and legs.

Oberle was attacked by the chimps on Thursday at Camp Eden at the Jane Goodall Institute in Nelspruit, South Africa. He reportedly crossed into a no-go zone at the camp to prevent the chimpanzees from throwing rocks at tourists. The animals dragged him 30 yards into their enclosure and attacked him.

Oberle is in critical, but stable condition.

Parents of US chimp attack victim head to South Africa

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The uncle of an American graduate student mauled by chimpanzees at a South African sanctuary says the man's parents are flying from the U.S. to visit their critically injured son.

Carl Oberle of suburban St. Louis said his 26-year-old nephew, Andrew F. Oberle, remained hospitalized Saturday.

Officials say the University of Texas at San Antonio anthropology graduate student was badly injured Thursday when two chimpanzees pulled him under a fence while he was giving a lecture at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden.

Carl Oberle described chimps as his nephew's "passion" and says he knew each animal by its "name and face."

A conservationist who runs the sanctuary says investigators will have to wait until Oberle is well enough to provide details to try to determine what prompted the attack.

@satoday: You're quite right. There is so much being reported, and sometimes quite a dispersity regarding injuries and such. I had read on a couple of news sites about the loss of an arm, losses of toes and fingers....some, partial or full, as well as "partial amputation of an ankle", the latter I'm still trying to comprehend. It may be a while before the complete truth is revealed. No matter the reality, the young man has been severly injured and the course of his life changed and challenged with enormous difficulties. He needs and deserves our prayers, and donations if one feels compassionately inclined. We all make mistakes in life and some are more costly than others, but that doesn't make us an individual unworthy of compassion, care, concern, prayers, or assistance.

Hope he survives and recovers - so much reporting about his condition. Some reporting foot torn off, fingers torn off - never heard anything about such severe damage that he lost his arm. What a costly mistake - he wanted to protect the visitors and took too big a risk. Maybe if the visitors are in danger from rock throwing, the fencing should be changed.

Hope he gets better soon, but a no go zone is that for a reason, those chimps were probably crazy
