Two men inside the pickup truck were killed. Their identities have not been released. Based on the license plate on the truck, police believe the two men may be from Austin.

The person who called 911 described the pickup as being all over the road just before the crash. Officials at the scene estimated the pickup truck was traveling about 60 miles an hour when it hit the 18-wheeler. Investigators are now looking into whether or not alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt.

Shelly, I am a family member of a man named Sean who was killed on the same night. His wife is my cousin, and I am trying to figure out if Sean was in this accident. I don't want to ask her, obviously, but since I have desperately trying to find out what happened, and saw your post, I was wondering if you could confirm or deny that his name was Sean K. Thank you so much. My sincere condolences to your friends for their loss.

I think it is fair to say that just about any vehicle that hits the DOT bar on a tractor trailer combination at highway speeds, and knocks the tandem axles loose on the trailer is not going to fair very well. A DPS trooper speeding in the fog hit one in his marked unit some years back N. of Waco and died as well. As for trafic enforcement in Schertz, I always see the officers working radar out there at all hours, morning, noon and night.

that was a late model Chevy pick-up. it hit a tractor trailer at 60 and blew up like a bad episode of CHiPs. you'd think a $45,000 truck would be able to handle such an impact. what a piece of junk engineering.

It is very unfortunate...that the 18-wheeler was damaged.

I passed by there about 5:30AM, and the pile was still smoking. I see reckless drivers on I-35 all the time, since there's apparently no traffic enforcement (especially during rush hour). The pickups are the poorest-handling vehicles - due to their high center of gravity and poor rear traction - yet the fools still drive them like sports cars!
