SAN ANTONIO - A DPS Trooper in the middle of arresting a DWI suspect overnight was hit by another DWI suspect.

The off-duty trooper pulled over the first driver, and had just put him in the backseat when he saw a truck heading toward him. The trooper tried to speed away, but the second DWI suspect rammed the trooper's patrol car, trapping the original DWI suspect inside. The fire department had to cut him out.

Adding to the irony, a volunteer with the group "Mother's Against Drunk Driving" was riding along with the trooper. The two of them suffered minor injuries. The driver of the truck was arrested.

Oh, @LindaB, give it a rest. Alcohol is not the problem…people who ABUSE alcohol are the problem. I don’t agree with the city ban on smoking either, but actually, smoking HAS caused people to lose control of their cars. I’ve known of plenty of folk to drop a lit cigarette, and immediately start rooting around in their laps to find the flaming cancer stick. I don’t think the government on any level has the right to “ban” substances. If you want to ban something and keep people from dying in car accidents, BAN AUTOMOBILES. I agree entirely that the penalties need to be MUCH harsher for those who refuse to be responsible. How about this: As soon as you are accused of DWI, the vehicle you are driving is impounded, regardless of who owns it. When you’re convicted, it is SOLD at auction. If you still owe the bank for it, tough. You pay the car payment for a vehicle you no longer own, and the money from the auction goes into a fund for victims. If you borrow a car, get another DWI, that vehicle is impounded, sold at auction, and you go to prison for a year. Oh, and I'm with you @Limdull. We're losing the "war on drugs" anyway!

How about we legalize marijuana and kick out all of the small time stoners taking up jail space, and start locking up these DRUNK IDIOTS who have no respect for human life by getting behind the wheel while drunk! This is pathetic, I fear for my life if I have to drive after midnight on the weekends in this town, we need harsher penalties for this crap. I drink, but I never drink and drive, not even once! It's not that hard to have a designated driver, or be one if you've got friends... of course most of these idiots are probably forever alone.

The only way things will change is when one these law makers loved one's is killed by a drunk driver. Other wise nothing is going change or get done. So judges and jurors, keep handing out PROBATION!!!

At what point are we going to decide drunk driving is a serious offense and actually start delving out hefty prison sentences?

The lenient laws allowing probation for drunk driving homicides need to get harsher. Google your local Representatives, Congressman, and Senators to express how unjust probation is for drunk drivers including those who kill. It is not something we need to tolerate so easily.

The Tropper was off duty who called a dwi unit over to the scene. The MADD volunteer was with the dwi unit cop. They arrested the guy the Tropper stopped and put him in the back. The other drunk drunk driver in the truck hit the cop car.

As soon as the City Councel STOPS supporting Alcohol at Fiesta, maybe things will start to change. Why does alcohol have to be at every single event?? Can't people live without it anymore? Don't the City Government CARE???? I think Not. I would never take a visitor from out of town to any function, especially Fiesta....it's an embarassment... Whatever happened to good, clean, family fun?? I'll tell you....Alcohol took it away. I think the bars should start being held accountable more often than they are, as well as the bartenders, that serve already intoxicated customers. Until you have a family member killed by a sloppy drunk, then everybody ignores it.Alcohol is far Worse than tabacco could EVER be, yet the CITY gripes about tabacco MORE than ALCOHOL. Smoking a cigarette does not cause anyone to lose control of their cars and maime and kill people like alcohol does. When adults drink, they are sending the message to their children, that it is OK...NOT SO...

With the exception of goodmichael, these are some of the most ignorant comments I've seen posted on WOAI.

Just wondering why if the trooper was off duty a MADD volunteer was with him?
