Many Americans who have fallen on hard times have turned to food stamps to feed their families. The government assistance only covers food for people, not their pets. That has given rise to a new non-profit that provides food stamps for pet owners who can't afford to feed their animals.

Do not understand all the negative comments - The article does not give much information but it sounds to me like this program is privitely funded and no tax dollars are used. I applaud the person or persons who are doing this. I always imagined if I won the lotto I would use a good portion to help animals and providing food for families who are haveing a hard time seems like a great way to help. Before I retired (and had ten times the income) I donated money to organizations like PETA and ASPCA and locally to places like Tracey's dogs.

My neighbor hoarding 12 cats would probably signup. She takes them in and now others are showing up to breed all night. This is a bad idea if they give out assistance and contribute to this problem.

We can all easily fall on hard times. If you suddenly lose your job, that requires you to have to give away your pet? With so many homeless animals already, their chances of being euthanized is high. I like the idea of this - where can I find information in donating? Pets are sometimes just as important as your human family. Those against this are just being shallow minded. Obviously, not the type of people who have concern for others. One stroke of bad luck or bad judgement call and any one of us could be in a situation of needing someone's help. I'd rather feed a helpless animal than someone who is abusing govt assistance.

I think that is great once in awhile people need help. No one wants to give away pet that is like family. It is not my job to judge what they are going through. I am going to try and help that is what God would want us to do. Because you never know when the tables might turn.
