(San Antonio) News 4 San Antonio has confirmed that the New Braunfels-based Scooter Store abruptly furloughed nearly its entire workforce Friday.
In an e-mail to workers, the company said it's "experiencing significant business challenges" and is "streamlining current operations."
The workers were told they're being placed on unpaid leave until further notice.
The company, which sells motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters, employs about 1,800 people. Some 1200 of them work at the New Braunfels headquarters.
The furloughs come two weeks after federal agents raided that same headquarters, apparently investigating Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
The Scooter Store has paid the federal government millions of dollars over the last decade to settle claims it has overbilled Medicare for scooters and wheelchairs.
