SAN ANTONIO -- A standoff in northwest Bexar County ended when SWAT officers shot a man they say fired at deputies.
Neighbors spotted the 53-year-old man armed with a double barrel, gold-plated shotgun, walking down Saddle Trail off Scenic Loop Road at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Deputies say Brian Haese pointed his gun at patrol officers who responded to his home and they backed off. Investigators say Haese fired several shots into the ground and into the air and he wouldn't answer the phone when negotiators tried to contact him. When SWAT officers were walking toward the home to relieve the patrol officers, Haese shot once at the officers, who returned fire, Lt. Dennis Casillas said.
Haese was shot once in the abdomen and was conscious when AirLife flew him to University Hospital.
Lt. Casillas said he has a history of mental illness and deputies had been to his home two days before the standoff to check on him, but he didn't come to the door. Haese was apparently not taking his medication and was upset about the loss of his brother-in-law. Deputies said he was a paranoid schizophrenic.
Haese had been in jail for resisting arrest and evading officers but was out on bond, Lt. Casillas said. He's facing four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for pointing his gun at patrol officers and firing a shot at SWAT officers.
