SAN ANTONIO -- Rumors and threats of violence kept more than 1,000 students in the Northside Independent School District home from school Monday.

More than 800 students were absent at O'Connor High School and 200 were out a Brandeis. Rumors started flying on Facebook about a possible school shooting, so many students were too scared to go to school.

NISD officials say they are taking the rumors seriously and have increased the number of patrol officers at both campuses.

Just maybe if the schools communicated a little better this would not have happened. Once that many students didn't show up then a message went out to parents. That should of been the first step.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. So scary and sad that these kids have to be afraid to go to school.

I agree with stabzz, and killers often do tell people, people just don't take them seriously. that also happens with wifebeaters too. people just don't think others will actually do anything. better safe than sorry. and personally after going to a school with regular friday shootings in a horrible Las Vegas public school, I am glad people are taking these seriously, they should

Who are we kidding, it's not like the kids would have learned anything if they had actually gone to school.

msshocker, unfortunately you are wrong. Previous instances of this type of behavior were publicized and were not taken seriously. As a matter of fact, one of the Columbine shooters had his own website that provided indications of his intent. Remember that [often times] these are kids and are looking for someone to reach out in some form. Usually, there are indications and it is up to us to take them seriously.

Just a question- Before the shootings at Columbine, VA Tech, etc. were there rumors of school violence? To my knowledge there was not any indication this would happen. In my opinion, if someone is crazy enough to bring a gun to school and randomly shoot to kill people, I doubt they would have told anyone beforehand. And I seriously doubt they would take the time to update their Facebook page, Twitter acct or MySpace to warn everyone. I may be wrong but I hope I'm not.

Students missing school because of threats like this are not ridiculous. I wouldn't neccessary call it "fake" after not ONE but TWO students taking their life. As for-SA NATIVE watching a movie & facing reality are two different things. Of course anything can be comprimised but it sure is a heck of allot better to have metal detectors for a period of time before this passes. Why else would these be used at the airports?? When such rumors or whatever you want to call it are being broadcast by the news media & radio station. That alone is serious. We as parents have every right to keep our children home, if we feel such a threat to be factual. In all it is better to be safe than sorry. I do realize if something is going to happen. It will. We just need to pray it doesn't and we need to keep our children close to us. Stay alert to all your surroundings.

Really a facebook rumor. Some kid said "I'm going to blow up the school" everybody panics and 1000 kids skip school for no reason. I am not referencing what was said just making a point. If somebody claims violence why didn't somebody turn that over to the police. This was some idiot kid passing rumors so he doesn't have to take a test. Really you kept your kids home out of fear. I read about rapes, shootings, and robberies everyday on here, but I still go out and do what I have to do in life. If parents were more responsible about their kids we wouldn't have school violence. Read about these gang bangers whose parents say they were all go kids, why why why. Where were all these parents, and why did they teach their kids horrible values. There are cops on every school district in town you have to believe in them and that they can do their jobs.

Someone needs to start a Facebook rumor that any kids missing school will be forced to read articles and comments on WOAI's website all day long from home. That should make them eager to return to school.
