SAN ANTONIO -- A man who police say is the suspect in a string of overnight robberies has been charged with three counts of aggravated robbery after he was shot twice by a security officer at a restaurant he was allegedly trying to rob.
According to police, the first robbery occurred at 10:56 p.m. Friday at Leapin Lizard Pub located in the 300 block of East Commerce Street.
Johnny Reyes, 29, allegedly attempted to rob the the pub by ransacking its office when a manager identified as James Montes walked in, police said.
That’s when Reyes is alleged to have fired a single gunshot at Montes and then fled the scene, according to police.
Montes, officials said, was transported to the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his neck.
The spree continued at the St. Anthony Hotel located on East Travis Street around 11:45 p.m. Friday.
Police say a suspect walked up to a clerk, held a gun to his face and demanded all the money from the register. The clerk told the suspect that they had no money in the register and fled the scene, according to police.
Reyes continued his spree around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at Pico De Gallo restaurant in the 100 block of South Leona Street, just west of downtown, police said.
According to police, Reyes was in the process of robbing the location when he was confronted by a security guard who was forced to shoot back when Reyes attempted to shoot at him.
Reyes’ gun may have malfunctioned, police said.
Reyes suffered two gunshot wounds -- one to the head and another to the abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and later charged with three counts of aggravated robbery.
