KINGSTON, Washington -- Unruly children are an ongoing source of friction in the restaurant industry. But, as NBC Today Contributor A. Pawlowski reports, a restaurant in Washington came up with a surprising response to the problem.

Laura King, her husband and their three children, ages 2, 3 and 8, recently feasted on pizza, pasta and mushroom ragu at an Italian eatery near their home in Kingston, Wash. The kids – no strangers to restaurants -- quietly enjoyed their meals.

Then, the server brought out a bowl of ice cream for the children to share and when the family checked the bill, it turned out the dessert was on the house.

The restaurant had applied a “well behaved kids” discount of $4, which covered the ice cream. An image of the receipt quickly went viral after one of King’s friends posted it online.

What a fantastic idea! Now start working on movie theaters and grocery stores. I raised two kids who didn't always behave...once...but they never made the same mistake twice. Calmly (not angrily) take them outside, deliver a quick swat on the bottom (only the well padded bottom), which gets their attention, then tell them this will happen every time they act up. If you start at age two, you won't have that problem when they're 8 or 10. Unless a kid is a natural born troublemaker, this works like a charm. Your reward for your hard work is a considerate, well-adjusted, socially acceptable adult.

I would LOVE to see a restaurant reward a family like that. The other night I watched a family of four -- 2 adults, 2 children, and not ONCE did the parents take their eyes off their phones to address the behavior of their children. They didn't even talk to each other!!! How very sad that so few people who have children are actually parents.

Hey, any restaurants in San Antonio do this? I would even go if they had a specific area saved for people with no kinds in tow. The older I get the less patience I have with parents that don't control their kids. Yes I raised a child and he was removed from the restaurant when he misbehaved until he decided it wasn't worth it and calmed down. Parents these days don't pay attention to what their little darlings are doing, they are totally engrossed in what they are doing.

San Antonio Parents are complete slackers at restaurants with rare exceptions. I've been to places all over the country and I've never seen a worse city for noisy, obnoxious and disrespectful CHILDREN. You do NOT have the right to disrupt and make everyone's dining experience a living hell with your F-trophies when you know they will act like hyenas. These "parents" should be charged EXTRA and the rest of the crowd should be compensated. Great Idea from WA state!
