SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Police say an "experienced" cyclist was hit and killed by a 17-year-old boy, who was speeding down West Avenue seconds before the collision.

The cyclist, 55-year-old Devan Smith, died at the scene.

Police say Smith had just turned onto West Avenue from West Silver Sands before the teen drove through the intersection and crashed into him.  Witnesses told police the teen was weaving in and out of traffic in his Dodge Ram pickup truck. After hitting Smith, he hit a sign and then a utility pole, police said.  The pole snapped and a large portion ended up in a neighbor's backyard.

Police said the teen was released and may be charged with manslaughter. The investigation is ongoing, and police at the scene were investigating who had the right of way.

I own a bike, but I think anyone who bikes on the roads here is a fool! Sure you can legally do it, but what does that really matter when you are dead or disabled as the result of someone hitting you? I'd rather not take my chances. You can be experienced, follow all the rules, and wear your helmet, but a car or truck will still destroy you if you get hit. I only bike at parks well away from traffic.

Carl45, these teens are Mommy's and Daddy's little angels. They can do know wrong. They have no respect because they are taught that they are special. The parenting is a contributing factor to this behavior.

I'm actually surprise that we don't have more people being killed by these teenagers driving around like the roads belong to them only. I see it everyday, including Taft HS parking. I don't know if it's a trend of what, but I've seen some doing a zig zag maneuver down the road at high speed.

Not sure why Churchill HS kids - any just Texas teens in general - all have these HUGE new trucks? I've seen them speed out from Churchill's Parking lot onto Blanco road screaming and speeding. No one really cares.... Thanks Mom and Dad!

The sad thing is, many cyclists I know are policemen, firemen, doctors, nurses, civic leaders, etc. Many of which participate in charity rides that raise millions of dollars for charities like the MS Society, American Diabetes Association, Livestrong, and other noble causes. RIP Devan. :( I hadn't heard that the kid got out of his truck and started yelling at the injured cyclist. If this is in fact true, it's sickening and a sad indication of what our society has become. And FWIW, before you intentionally attack a cyclist by throwing stuff at them, buzzing them, or what have you....understand that there's a rectangular piece of metal on the back of your vehicle that identifies who you are and where you live. When these things happen to me, I ALWAYS get a license plate number.

The State law, "blueman1963", was passed by the State legislature but vetoed by Governor Perry. The City of San Antonio passed a safe passing ordinance to protect bicyclists a short while back, but it hasn't seen to have protected anyone as it was just a "we passed a law" measure to pander for votes. The only way to protect people from reckless drivers is tough prosecutions and harsh punishments (but with juries in this town neither of those options are available). Good luck to the DA, though, as they prosecute this case.

Devan was a very sweet and cheerful spirit with a smile for everyone. He was a loving father andf his children were his pride and joy. He will be missed. Please pray for his children.

I recall a law being passed that requires motorists to move over a lane when passing someone on a bike. I believe three years or so ago. Sadly the law seems to have had the opposite impact - deaths of bike riders are becoming a regular news. For example the husband and wife killed along Helotes on route 211 and the Doctor up along the access road in Beorne. What i find even more horrifying then the meaningless tragic loss of life have been the pathological responses on this blog - blaming the innocent bike riders for being run down like animals - by animals who possess a license to kill (a DPS license). I am one of these riders who is responsible for my health, contributes to society, obeys the law. On every ride I have had I cannot one recall being skimmed by pick up truck, honked at by blaring horms riding in the bike lane, having beer bottles thrown at me one stirking my helmet, being cut off the road and hit to be thrown over the bars - to have the driver leave the sceene. To all the bike haters on the road - beware for the blue, black and white bike - I now videotape my rides and will capture the hate for the general publis to see how sick you are and to perhaps pursude the DA to actually enforce the laws that were passed for public safety. God bless you to the families of the fallen.

I agree with Little Lady, why is just about everyone blaming the cyclist? The eyewittness to the accident stated that when the driver got out of his truck he started yellig at the dead man on the ground for getting in his way!! My God, he took out a telephone pole after killing the man!! I just hope this kid PAYS big for what he did.
