SAN ANTONIO - Alcohol, pornography, and a sexual device found inside a San Antonio police sergeant's work vehicle. But instead of collecting that evidence after Sergeant Joe Myers crashed his truck, responding officers tried to hide it.
Four days after Sergeant Myers crashed his city-issued truck into a guardrail, Chief Bill McManus held a press conference in an effort to do some damage control. At the time, six of his officers were under investigation and accused of trying to remove evidence from Sergeant Myers' vehicle. They were also being investigated for trying to take the police veteran home instead of jail.
"My concern is for the integrity and reputation of the police department,” Chief Bill McManus told us back in February. “And our officers are held and will be held at the highest standards. And this is not acceptable behavior."
Nearly nine months after the accident we are finally getting some answers on what really happened the night Sergeant Myers went for a joy ride.
Sergeant Andrea Klauer was one of the first to find Joe Myers wandering a parking lot near St. Mary's and Highway 281 in his underwear. She drove him to a nearby restaurant where he was given coffee to sober up. She was suspended for five days for not using better judgment and for intentionally not turning on her in-car camera when Sergeant Myers was in the back seat. Sergeant Ramiro Garcia was with Klauer that morning back in February. The suspension document states he was the person who took the alcohol bottles, pornographic films and magazines, and a sexual device out of Myers' work truck. His suspension was for 15 days. Lieutenant Steve Velasquez was also on scene and was the Director of SAPD's Narcotics Unit, the same unit Sergeant Myers was assigned to. The night Myers crashed his truck Velasquez was the one that ordered other officers to take the sergeant home instead of jail. (See attached document for more details.)
