SAN ANTONIO- Two police officers were sent to the hospital after their cruiser was hit by a suspected drunk driver.

This crash happened at Judson and Nacogdoches shortly before 11:30 Wednesday evening. Investigators say the officers were about to make a left turn when an SUV ran a red light and hit them.

They were taken to Northeast Baptist with minor injuries. The SUV driver was not hurt and now faces DWI charges.

I won't rant and rave but if the penalty for DWI/DUI was severe the first time we might have fewer offenders. Driving is a privilege, not a right. This privilege should be removed for no less than 5 years, the plate removed from the vehicle they are driving, spend no less than 90 days, and the fine should be substantial. No provisional license given, they can walk, ride the bus or take a taxi..or maybe a friend or spouse can take them to work. Because the first time caught is just that, the first time they were caught. They have most likely driven drunk a dozen or more times before, and thought they were never gonna be caught. But I also want to say something else. Distracted driving. A husband and child were taken recently, because of a cell phone call or text message. I don't care who you are, police included because I've seen you guys doing the same thing, you CAN NOT give 100% of your attention to driving if you are talking to someone not inside your car. Text messaging and driving is the same or worse than driving drunk..at highway speed you have traveled over 100 yards just looking at your phone. And listening to the conversations at the mall, or park..anywhere, you can't make me believe you'll see that lane change made or sudden slowing of traffic while talking to your sweetie or arguing with some fool. Hang up, leave your phone in you pocket..you can answer the call when you stop..How much time will that take compared to how long will someone suffer because you can't wait.

Good point wilkim45...the state needs to deal out much harsher penalties for the repeat DUI offender. If it was up to me i would make the re-up fee for there DL so high most of them would not be able to afford it.And if they drove with out a licence and get caught DUI they would be dealt a very stiff penalty and lose the car in the process.

it's unfortunate for our society that this drunk will live to drive drunk again.....possibly killing an innocent motorist the next time they drive drunk.

even officers need to look both ways before pulling out in to the street.. maybe they would have caught the drunk driver instead of becoming their victim..
