SAN ANTONIO -- Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a 58-year-old man who was brutally beaten at his West Side auto repair shop.
The attack happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Medrano's Transmission Service in the 2000 block of Castroville Road. When officers arrived, they found 27-year-old Joseph Medrano kneeling over his father, 58-year-old Jose Luis Medrano, who was lying in pool of blood.
Joseph Medrano said a man, who was later identified as 25-year-old David Lee Garcia, had argued with a woman at the shop earlier and had returned with two other men and attacked him and his father. He said when the men first arrived, they began punching him. He told officers the other two men grabbed him and dragged him away into the parking lot after he pushed Garcia to the ground, and Garcia then attacked his father.
Joseph Medrano said he saw Garcia grab a shovel and hit Jose Medrano in the head once, knocking him to the ground. He told investigators Garcia then continued hitting his father in the head with the shovel, striking him several times. Joseph Medrano told investigators after the two men hit him several times in the back with a chair, they and Garcia walked away.
Jose Medrano was taken to University Hospital where he later died. Joseph Medrano was also taken to University Hospital and is expected to recover.
Medrano's other son said he believes he was the intended target of the attack, which he claims is related to a dispute over his ex-girlfriend, who had also been involved with Garcia.
Garcia was later arrested and has been charged with murder and aggravated assault.
