I know that an accident is something you didn't intend to happen, but when someone dies, I don't think you should just be able to say "oops". If you wreck a car, or break something at a store, fine, but when a baby dies because it was left in a hot car, or a couple die because you weren't paying attention, again you should just be able to say "oops" and walk away, life is too precious.

I think the anti-cyclist (if you can call it that) comments are directed at those in the cyclist community that wanted to see this guy thrown in jail for a simple mistake that happens to EVERYBODY regardless of driving experience. Of course I do believe that if cyclist wish to have the same rights on the road as drivers then they ought to pay a registration tax on their bike. (In my personal view I do not believe anyone should have to pay registration fees but fair is fair) I ride a bike as well, but I know it is safer to ride that bike in one of the many parks we have in San Antonio. What I am really trying to express is that bad things happen to good people in life. That is life and those that wish to cast hatred toward this man for a simple mistake (such as one commenter who hopes someone in his family is killed) are hypocritical.

Don't forget, "LikeBike", that bicyclist usually own a car or two, pay all the road taxes as to motorists and because the bicycle on these roads they cause less wear and tear to the road and less pollution to the air. We are not "hobbyists" (as "Carmen Arocha" said) but, rather, commuters who choose to ride to work or to the store as well as ride for pleasure. It is up to us - whether driving our cars or riding our bikes - to do so safely. Remember that old advertising capaign from years ago - "Drive Defensively", and everyone will live to bike or drive another day.

I'm appalled at the votes and comments for the people that say cyclists should say off the roads. They are legally vehicles and have the same rights to the use of the roads as any other vehicle. They also must follow all traffic laws just as any other vehicle. With comments like this, it's no wonder that San Antonio ranks so with regards to obesity. Also, cyclists do not have a 2 ton metal shell protecting them. They will almost always lose with any impact with a automobile. People need to watch out for cyclists int he same way they must watch out for motorcyclists.

San Antonio has alot of selfish drivers who have no regard for others on the road. A lot times the driver is preoccupied with phone, radio, coffee, passenger, breakfast, applying make-up, on and on. The cops are only only concerned about their donut.

I agree that bicyclists ought to be able to ride around with the cars any time they feel like it, as that is their right. It is not as if our cities are built all spread out and automobiles are needed to get around. Automobile drivers should watch out for bicyclists and stop running over them. If you are trying to get to work on Loop 1604 and the road is full of bicycles, you just need to cool your heels and let the hobbyists have their turn. I have mentioned several times in the past that it may be efficatious and prudent to have headstones specially made up in advance for the use of these abused crusaders for bicycling. They could say things like, "It's OK, he had the right of way" or "It wasn't his fault" or possibly "Drivers should be more careful". I feel that this type of advertising may well get the attention of the driving public over the next ten generations or so.

What appears to be missing from this conversation is a reminder that driving, like many other things, is a privilege, not a right. And with that privilege comes responsibility. Bicycles, according to state law, are afforded the same rights as automobiles. The primary responsibility of those who drive is safety. We don't have to like the laws of our land, but we do need to abide by them or suffer consequences. By the way, bicycling is not quite as evil as some have indicated. Cyclists are generally healthier people, reducing healthcare costs and medical expenses for everyone. Cyclists have lesser occurrences of diabetes and obesity, further reducing our nation’s healthcare burden. Those of us who use our bikes to commute to and from work thwart harmful emissions from polluting our land and reduce our national addiction to Middle Eastern oil. And fit, responsible citizens enjoy a healthy self-esteem and longer life expectancy. Maybe we’d all be better off if we became a more bike-friendly city. Cycling probably won’t lead to world peace, but it does have some pretty attractive side effects. So if you prefer four wheels to two, at least do so responsibly and safely. Slow down and be respectful of cyclist you see sharing the road. You might even want to pull that bike out of the garage and take if for a ride. You’ll be surprised at how good you feel afterwards.

Unless there are facts of the case that were not reported this case should never have gone to trial and sets a dangerous precedent. Can our DA honestly say she has never swerved inadvertantly? Yes we have a responsibility to be vigilant when behind the wheel but this was very simply a tragic accident. The driver wasn't drinking, he wasn't texting, he wasn't under the influence of a drugs. People are not perfect and accidents happen. And although I do not like blaming the deceased they too have some responsibility for this because they made a decision to take a risk by ridig a bike on a very busy roadway. If our DA is going to start prosecuting people for honest mistakes/accidents then any of us posting on this forum are at risk.

As tragic as this may be, WHY THE HE77 were these people riding a bicycle on Bandera Rd in the early morning hours? There are bicycle, jogging and walking trails going all the way from Grissom Rd to Loop 1604 and IH10, with NO THREATS of vehicles hitting them. I am sorry folks, but Bicycles DO NOT belong on the main roads of San Antonio, or anywhere else for that matter.

to stop this from happening again, people on bikes should stay off the roads!!! if you don't want to, make sure your family doesn't come crying when you are dead. these adults knew that there was a danger riding on HIGHWAY 16, they are the ones responisble from making their child an orphan. this man will have to live the rest of his life, knowing he accidently killed two people and that is punishment enough.
