WASHINGTON -- Two upcoming military air shows have already fallen victim to the country's looming fiscal crisis and impending sequestration.

The good news, the air shows we have here are still going on as planned--for now. But you have to understand what sequestration is to fully understand how it will impact you.

Sequestration was adopted by Congress in 1985 to deal with the federal budget deficit then. When Congress can't agree on where to make budget cuts, previously agreed upon budgets are thrown out and across-the-board cuts are adopted to help control deficit spending.

As Americans watch the political gridlock at work in our nations capital, the looming impact of sequestration could be very problematic for South Texas.

The cuts will chop almost 10-percent from non-defense programs and 13-percent from defense programs. So, you can imagine what the impact might be with tens of thousands of local jobs reliant on the military, the U. S. Border Patrol and the TSA.

The bottom line is that $85 billion in spending cuts will be felt across the board. And with the major military presence here in San Antonio, there will be no dodging this fiscal bullet.

While it appears military personnel will be exempt, civilian employees of the Department of Defense will not. First off, gone will be the roughly 1500 and 2000 people hired every week by the DOD to fill civilian jobs. Other DOD employees will be furloughed, meaning they will be forced to take one day a week off, essentially a 20-percent pay cut. There will be significant maintenance cut backs as well. And that, the DOD says will impact military readiness.

As for the border patrol, it already faces budget and manpower challenges and that will only get worse.

When it comes to the TSA, budget cuts there will most likely trickle down to less personnel at airports and longer security lines.

There is still time for a deal to be worked out, but the chances of that happening don't look good.

If furloughs do happen, workers must be given 30 days notice. So, it appears the impact won't be felt until at least April.

Obama doesn't want to cut one cent from any bloated entitlement social program. Hell, he's increased social program spending dramatically with Obamacare, and through his failure to oversee everything from Obamadisability to Obamafoodstamps to Obamaphones. The only remaining answer is to starve the government of money. We live within budgets on a daily basis. They can too. It's time to force them to make cuts.

Congress?? Really! excuse me but sequestration was the Presidents little brain child.. He thought of it he put it together and he owns it.. So he needs to put the blame exactly where it belongs in his lap. How many recommendations did he follow from his so called debt commission? Zero that's how many not a single one because it would've involved spending cuts that would've angered his voting base. Now that he's gotten his tax increases he's trying to double down with even more tax increases in lieu of having to do any spending cuts so don't let his rhetoric fool you.

Actually, twister2, that's not exactly true. I sell CALVES for meat, most of which will go to a feedlot long before ever going to the slaughterhouse. It will be a while before any spending cuts with regard to USDA inspections will effect that, outside the "fear factor" jacking prices and stuff up. And, just so you know, the price you pay for your beef in the supermarket can't be blamed on us producers. There are the businesses in the middle that create the greater market price, beyond the environmental factors that will increase the cost of production by those like me, the feedlots that have to pay so much more for the feed to fatten the calves before going to slaughter, then there's the slaughterhouse and their increasing expenses and regulations that gets passed on to the consumer, and it doesn't end there. I can barely afford the cost of even the cheapest cuts of beef out of the supermarket, and I raise the darn things to feed all of you that eat beef. Quit spinning your BS, twister. Government IS TOO BIG!!!! And, we just maybe need sequestration to go into effect for a while to give everybody a great big taste of Big Brother, AKA Big Government. I can always feed my family out of my backyard. What will you eat? The other question is about our National Defense and the mockery Washington politicians are making of it and gutting it. We are no longer the feared and respected world power, with a POTUS that is also not feared or respected around the world. We are rapidly becoming a laughing stock, and that's an extremely dangerous and disastrous position to be in. And, voter fraud by Obama supporters is being proven all across the country. He possibly wasn't legally voted back into office, and I seriously doubt that he was legally voted in the first time.....although, I will admit that McCain wasn't popular and didn't garner much support.......but Sarah Palin DID grab votes for their ticket. Actually, the chicken market may be the one most hurt.

If you raise cattle for meat, you won't be able to sell until the safety inspectors return from furlough. But hey, government is too big, right?

Congress needs to get their head out of their @$$, and start working together. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice you're party's view, both parties.
