LIVE OAK, Texas--The handgun was found back on March 28th at the Country Home Learning Center located at 11909 Toepperwein Rd.
According to the facility director a teacher found the firearm inside a three year olds backpack. The director told News 4 WOAI the gun belonged to the parent of the child who had inadvertently left the weapon inside the backpack.
One parent who didn't want to be identified said her daughter was in the classroom where the gun was found. Not only is she a concerned parent, but a former employee.
She said because of what happened she withdrew her 4 year old from the facility and also left her job. "That was my last straw when it comes down to the safety of my daughter and her well being," she replied.
She went on to say she was unaware about the incident since she worked in a separate building. She found out about the gun incident along with other parents through a letter the daycare sent weeks later. "I was livid, I was really made, upset about the situation, and the way it was handled, " she went on to say.
Another mom we spoke with said too much time went by before the daycare notified parents. "That's the part that rubs me the wrong way, how long it took them to notify us, especially since it was in their classroom, " she said.
The day of the incident the daycare notified both the Live Oak Police Department and The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
The director of the daycare facility said the reason why parents were not notified immediately was because Live Oak Police told them it was an open investigation. A state report revealed the daycare was in compliance.
According to the Live Oak Police Department the weapon was returned to the parent, and no formal charges had been filed.
