SAN ANTONIO – Ruth Clattenburg says she has not been able to cope since her son Troy was murdered at their apartment in the 1400 block of Bitters Road last month.
Clattenburg waited for hours outside the Bexar County Detention Center Friday, when she heard her 24-year old son’s accused killer was posting bond.
"I wanted to see his face.” Clattenburg said. “I wanted to look in his face. I just wanted to look into his eyes.”
The grieving mother says she wants answers from Cody Carmichael, 21, the man who police say confessed this week to that murder.
"He killed my son. He stole his life. He took something away from me that was more precious than anything in the world.”
The emotional mom was in bed sleeping as Troy was shot in the back of the head on February 21, 2010. Carmichael allegedly told police be murdered Clattenburg because he was making sexual advances.
"I think it's a lie,” said Clattenburg’s mother. “Troy was not aggressive. It wasn't his MO. Troy was gentle."
Ruth Clattenburg says her son was confused about his sexuality, and she believes Carmichael set Troy up. Investigators say Carmichael left the house that fatal night and came back with the gun he used to shoot Troy in the back of the head.
"It should be investigated as a hate crime. It is a hate crime," Clattenburg said about her son’s murder.
Carmichael chose not to make any comments to media about the murder. Now, he’s out of jail on a $100-thousand bond. Clattenburg says she does not like it one bit.
"You confess that you murder somebody, and you're out free? Is it about money? Is that the justice system today in America?"
Clattenburg did not get a chance to confront Carmichael, because he bonded out of jail a few hours earlier than she expected.
"I pity you Cody,” she said. “You are in God’s hands, and you are in God's justice."
