SAN ANTONIO - A 10-year-old boy who survived an attack that left his mother and her friend dead is waking up from a medically induced coma.
Susan Watson believes the cuts to her grandson's arms and hands came from fighting off the man who was allegedly stabbing him with a knife. The same man who had already stabbed his mother Rhonda and her friend Casey.
“I'm not too sure how many adults would have stood up the way I think he did," Watson told News 4 WOAI.
Curtis was stabbed in the chest and suffered a collapsed lung. Watson believes if Casey Sweetwood hadn't carried her grandson to a neighbor's home, he may not have survived.
“We know she died from her injuries after carrying him to safety, and each of them were able to say who the assailant was, and then Curtis asked if he could go to sleep,” she said.
Sadly, she admits it’s a difficult time for the family, who is dealing with the unexpected costs of her daughter’s funeral and the medical costs for Curtis.
