SAN ANTONIO – A four-car crash killed one driver and left another in critical condition.

It happened around 5 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 at the Highway 281 interchange.

The Medical Examiner identifies the man who died as 48-year-old John Mark Rubalcava.

Officers described a complicated timeline of the accidents.

Officers say Rubalcava was driving a brown car and rear-ended a black car.

The second car ended up in a ditch, but the driver was okay and got out of the vehicle to check on Rubalcava.

While the second driver was on foot, a third car hit him.

Somehow, a fourth vehicle got involved and rear-ended the third vehicle. The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles are okay.

The second driver, the pedestrian, is now in critical condition at University Hospital.

Rubalcava was dead by the time emergency crews arrived.

Officers don’t know what caused the fatal accident. It was not raining and construction crews were not working that early in the morning.

Traffic was shut down on several lanes of the busy intersection for about six hours.

Very sad indeed - but most drivers go way to fast around here. To think they want to raise the speed limit is beyond me. The worst narrow roads Ive ever seen, terrible signage, limited markings that are quite vague, confusing to say the least, and so many distractions and signs, with speed and early morning hours do not mix. And whose idea was on- ramps with off- ramps coming together?? My sympathy to the family. If you have to stop off or on the road - put your flashers on immediately and call for help! Ive heard its safer to stay in your car - not sure what the answer to that is. SLOW DOWN & LIVE. There are way too many tragic accidents in SA. Badge 120 - speed probably was a factor, but Ive noticed following vehicles too close is also popular in SA.
