SAN ANTONIO – It's a heartbreaking story. An elderly couple is beaten and robbed and all by a man they knew and trusted for years. The couple spoke out, but only to News 4 WOAI, showing us the horrific crime that unfolded inside their east side home.
84 year old Viola Hood and 84 year old Jasper Heyman say they let a friend into their home and never expected he would attack them.
News 4 WOAI obtained the arrest affidavit that states 37 year old Alan Wayne Hughes borrowed money from the elderly couple a few weeks ago, but did not come to their home to pay them back. Instead, the affidavit states, Hughes came armed with a taser gun and pepper spray. Police say Hughes used both weapons on the couple and beat them unconscious before running out of the house with Hood’s wallet.
News 4 WOAI was allowed inside the couple’s home where blood stains revealed the brutality. Our camera found blood splattered on the living room rug, church hymnals, and on the kitchen counter.
"I wound up my head over there by that basket and he picked up that chair and held it up and throwed it right down on top of me,” Heyman told News 4 WOAI.
"When he knocked me down in the floor after he pepper sprayed me somehow I got cut there," Hood said.
Hood suffered a dislocated shoulder, a gash on her right hand, and multiple bruises. Heyman needed stitches in his left hand and suffered a deep gash to his left elbow, along with multiple giant-sized bruises to his arms, legs, and face.
Jasper tells News 4 WOAI the money is of no concern to him. He’s just disappointed he couldn’t do more to protect the love of his life.
"It just killed me to see him beating on her last night and I couldn't do anything about it. I couldn't get my breath enough to do it,” Heyman said.
“It’s ok, J. You were trying,” replied Hood.
San Antonio police arrested Hughes the next day. He is now charged with felony aggravated robbery. News 4 WOAI will keep you posted on what happens to Hughes.
