SAN ANTONIO - Many people spend their entire lives assuming they know where their families originated. I was one of those who had always been told by my relatives where we came from, but I was never sure until I had a DNA test. What I found out was surprising and gratifying. Click here to watch…

Ok, I hope I don't offend anyone but... I'm not sure what I am so surprised at... the fact that Ms Ramon is surprised that she's "part" Native American (and we are talking about the peoples who were here when all the boats landed) or the fa...ct that the geneologist is surprised. It only took me a short time reading the old encyclopedia britanica (back in the 80s) to read about how Mexican Americans are basically Native Americans with anywhere from nil (zero)-> to trace amounts -> to a crap load of Spanish (among other European and even African) ancestry depending on your familial background. WTH? Why is it so surprising? We learned about the Asian migration to North America across the Bering Straits during the ice age (didn't we?), which makes us Asian as well so now you know why every Mexican either knows or is related to someone nicknamed Chino/a. Come on people, I knew that and I was a straight C student in high school (it just wasn't interesting until computers where introduced my senior year - my only A :)

OMG people... first you complain that English needs to be made the "official" language, and then complain when somebody mispronounces something in Spanish... just can't make some trolls happy I guess...

I found out when I was fifteen that my mother had been married before and got divorced before she married Daddy. He used to beat her because she was Mexican.

Ya’ know, @OMGBBQ, these ladies probably didn’t grow up speaking Spanish. I know where and when Jacqueline Ortiz grew up, and her English is perfect, and her Mom and Dad don’t have any accents except South Texas, either. I grew up in San Antonio. I don’t speak Cherokee, Choctaw, or Gaelic…and those are my ethnic roots. I speak a lot more Spanish than a lot of my friends with roots in Mexico. So, what’s your point? It’s a nice “fluff” article that just shows you can learn a lot about your ancestry via DNA.
