SAN ANTONIO -- A major accident off of Loop 410 is tying up traffic on the North and Northeast Side.

The accident happened around 7:00 a.m. on westbound Loop 410 ramp at ramp to Airport/Wetmore. Officials say the driver of a gray Buick started to exit but then tried to swerve back onto the mainlanes at the last minute. His car slammed into the metal median and spun out. The driver of a black Nissan also traveling in the westbound lanes then crashed broadside into the Buick and then into a wall. The Buick then caught fire.

The driver of the Buick was pulled from his burning car but died at the scene. He was later identified as 36-year-old Paul Castillo III.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to a hospital. He is expected to be all right.

My condolences to the family of the deceased. I do believe that there are far too many people who drive, eat, text, talk on the phone, read, study class notes as well as do whatever else they should have done prior to getting in their car. There is no such thing as an accident in my opinion. Crashes occur because someone is not doing what they are supposed to be doing, not paying attention, or trying to do more that they need to be doing at the time, which is navigating a ton to three tons of steel and plastic down the road at fifty to sixty miles an hour. Sometimes there is not a lot of room for error.

Sorry, @lani460, but tell that to the INNOCENT man driving the Nissan who is still in the hospital. Your friend Paul made an idiotic mistake, and paid the ultimate price. Our sympathy and compassion are reserved for the Nissan driver and his family. And by the way, the word you were looking for is “tact” not “tack.”

We all make mistakes on the road its just unfortunate that someone died. Some you need an injection of compassion followed by tack. What if were your friend or loved one who died. It very well could be1

He made a mistake and paid for it with his life, when simple things like turn signals and obeying lane change laws actually keep people alive. I'm curious whether local driving schools teach this sort of nonsense and that's why people keep doing it here. WAY more than anywhere else, and we travel a lot. The cops don't seem to care. If you make a mistake, just follow the road you're on until you can turn around. Yeah, it takes more time, but that's the consequences for your mistake, and it keeps you alive. If you need to exit, do so no less than a half mile before your exit. Condolences to the family - take his legacy, and drive safely. Preach the message of safe and lawful driving to everyone you know.

i have seen some drivers cross 5 lanes at high speeds cutting everyone in their way off just because they believe they own the SA highways. i guess when the police arent around they have to drive like douches.

Typical San Antonio driver. These idiots wait till the last minute, then cut across 3 lanes of traffic to take the exit. Common sense say's stay on the ramp & take the next turnaround, but no, this fool decided to risk his life & others. Sorry bout ur bad luck, but ya wont pull that crap again.

Not that it makes much difference but it was the Nissan that had caught fire. I came up on the accident right after it happened. There were a lot of good samaritains trying to help these drivers and putting themselves at risk. Good job to them. I'm sorry to hear that someone lost their lives in this accident and my condolences go out to the drivers family.
