SAN ANTONIO- A dog attack in Northeast Bexar County sent a baby to the hospital. It happened around 6:30 Saturday night on the 3700 block of Candlewind Lane near Foster Road.

According to the baby's grandmother she had just pulled up in her SUV with her kids and grandson in the car. The grandmother said as they were getting out of the vehicle a pit bull was running towards them and growling.

The woman said the dog caught up with the baby and his mom and knocked the baby out of the baby carrier.

Antonette Hastings said, “My grand baby fell out of the seat, fell in the street, the dog turned from my daughter and jumped on top of my grand baby”.

According to Hastings, the baby was bit in the face. He was rushed to University Hospital. And while the rest of the family is shaken up, none of them were injured.

The dog is now in the care of animal protective services. They’re calling it a pit bull mix.

The family is trying to work with officers to get more information, including who the dog belongs to and whether the dog has had its rabies shots.

Where's Ladyfinger to defend these mutts again? She was all over the board when it was an adult who was bitten, but now it's a baby and she has nothing to say. Go figure. By the way, "master" is an idiot.

San Antonio study Mortality, Mauling and Maiming by Vicious Dogs, Annals of Sugery, April 201 found that pitbulls cause the highest rate of disablity, death and disfigurement as well as the highest hospital charges. There have been thousands of serious pitbull attacks now. The its the owner not the breed has been disproven so man times as family lovd and well-treaed pitbulls go beserk suddenly and without warning. If the owners all dogs would maul at an equal rate. Ummmmm...@Beets...did you know that dogs are color blind? That was one of the dumbest remarks. @Carmen, you are always good for a morning laugh, especially on a Monday. For those blaming the parents, they were taking the baby OUT of the car, of course he was unbuckled. And just a warning to anyone wanting to report an aggressive or vicious dog, good luck. We have an aggressive pit bull in our neighborhood that has been reported. ACS will do NOTHING to take the dog and leave it up to the owner to surrender...unless there is a physical attack. Personal experience. Don't look for the law to help you out unless you are bitten. Protect yourselves. I have had the pleasure of being exposed to really sweet pits, one of which actually protected my daughter and her friends from the very pit I was mentioning above. They are not all bad, and its aggression is based on how the owner raises the dog. My thoughts and prayers to this little boy and hopes that he recovers soon.

DR RICHARD SATTIN, chief of unintentional-injuries section of the Centers of Disease Control We're trying to focus public attention on this greatly underestimated public hazard. In 1979, pit bulls accounted for 20 percent of fatal attacks by dogs. That figure had risen to 62 percent by 1988. Nobody knows the dog population of the United States or the exact breakdown by breed. We do not believe that pit bulls represent anywhere near 42% percent of dogs in the United States. Therefore, we believe that the pit bull excess in deaths is real and growing.

PETER ANTEVY, pediatric E.R. physician, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Dr Antvey sees at least five dog-bite victims a month in his emergency room. Unfortunately, he said, "the biggest offender is the pit bull." MELISSA ARCA, MD The reality is that any dog can bite, and statistically speaking, a child is most likely to be bitten by the family dog or a dog that they know. When you're talking about bite severity resulting in life-threatening and even fatal injuries, pit bulls and Rottweilers are the main culprits. Experience absolutely colors our perception, and in this case I can't help but be affected by what I've seen. I will never forget a young child I treated in the ER during my pediatric residency. She suffered severe facial lacerations and tears to her face after a pit bull attack in her local park.

MORTALITY, MAULING, AND MAIMING BY VICIOUS DOGS, April 2011 Annals of Surgery “Fortunately, fatal dog attacks are rare, but there seems to be a distinct relationship between the severity and lethality of an attack and the breed responsible,” they wrote in an article published in the April issue of the medical journal Annals of Surgery. “These breeds should be regulated in the same way in which other dangerous species, such as leopards, are regulated.”
