HOUSTON - A rider died Sunday in the Tour de Houston, a popular cycling event that attracted about 5,000 riders. City officials say it is the first fatality in the race’s eight year history.

Those officials would only say the rider died after a medical emergency and so far have not even released whether the rider was a man or woman. They say the rider’s death was not related to a crash that took place shortly after the start of the race Sunday morning.
