New Braunfels, Texas - Memorial Day weekend is the first big holiday to gauge what type of impact the "can ban" would have on the crowds in New Braunfels.

According to New Braunfels Police, in years past there was overcrowding, drunkenness, assaults, and offensive behavior along the Comal River during Memorial Day weekend. But so far this year, it is a much different story.

“It hasn't changed anything for me," said Kazzi Broyles. "I love floating the river, and we are going to drink what we're going to drink, and I have our own little cooler.”

Broyles drove down from Dallas with a group of friends. She said Memorial Day weekend for her has always meant floating down the Comal River. While she will abide by the new ordinance, and she still plans to have the same fun.

“I know it's an inconvenience. I realize that, but at the same time it's going to keep the waters cleaner,” explained Broyles.

And while New Braunfels Police are still compiling stats for Saturday's river activity, they have so far arrested eight people.

Please note that the "river rules", including the "can ban", only apply to the Guadalupe River between Gruene Bridge and Mill Dam, per the ordinance: http://library.municode.com/HTML/11333/level3/PTIICOOR_CH86PARE_ARTIINGE.html#PTIICOOR_CH86PARE_ARTIINGE_S86-14COARALRILAST It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the city limits. This fact has been misrepresented in the media for far too long. The distinction is important because the rules are negatively impacting businesses outside the city's jurisdiction. Misreporting the affected area just exacerbates the situation.

Generalizations in your "can ban" stories are effecting the outfitters along the Guadalupe River in a negative way. You have aired/posted numerous segments regarding the new ordinance and most if not all of them have been misleading. Often you fail to specify which rivers these new laws effect and even more so, which parts of these rivers. The Guadalupe river along River Road and towards the bridge in Gruene is NOT covered by this ordinance. Businesses in these areas have been struggling for several years now due to the severe drought. They do not need misleading information handed to the few customers who are starting to return. Please consider being more specific and responsible when it comes to your reporting on the New Braunfels rivers!
