SAN ANTONIO -- A baby was found dead inside the garage of a Northeast Side home Monday morning.

A police report states 7-month-old Jaden Contreras had been living in the garage with his parents. The garage did not have any heating or air conditioning, and Child Protective Services had previously visited the family for that reason.

The baby's parents told police the baby had a cold for the last day or two and went to bed around 10:00 p.m. Sunday. They said he woke up around 2:00 a.m. Monday, and they fed him and put him back to bed in a play pen with blankets. When they tried to wake him around 9:00 a.m., they discovered he wasn't breathing and called 911. EMS workers were unable to revive the infant.

I appreciate the comment Lervia made. No one knows the full facts of this case yet. CPS is limited by law as to what action they can take on certain cases, so this needs to be taken up with the people who make the laws. Believe me, CPS workers wish they could do alot more but due to lack of funding, lack of staff and the legal system they cannot. This is a true tragedy and so sad for such a short life of this child. It will be interesting to find out what really happened. The weather has not been too hot or to cold. Maybe the child was sick and the parents were not educated enough to know when to take the child to the doctor. Maybe the child was sick, and they did all they could. Who else lived in the home and did they notice any concerns with the child? Alot of information is needed.

If C. P. S. is anything like social services in the U. K.then there wont be any improvement in there dealings with poorer families , there answers are always the same , lesson have been learned , but alas ,the deaths of infants and children from various sources i. e. violence and maltreatment by junkie or alcoholic parents continues.

Alice Cooper covered this in the late seventies, and it was gross then. It still is now. The fact that his name was Jaden makes me want to cry a river of tears.

CPS in the case of extravagant parties is City Public Service, not Child Protective Services. I'd like to know what the official cause of death was. I'm sure that lack of heat didn't help, but I haven't been running my heat this year, and the house hasn't fallen below the mid 60's. Granted this is a garage with thinner walls, but still it hasn't been freezing for a couple weeks now...

Please understand CPS stands for "City Public Service" which is a utilities company and "Child Protective Services" which in this case is the entity in question.

Hmmmm.....was this a "connected" garage? Most "connected" garages will have at least one electrical outlet that one could plug a heater into. There's much more that needs to be learned and understood from this story before judgements are made. And, who are we to make judgements without full knowledge of the facts, until and unless you wind up sitting on a jury in judgement of the situation and death. Granted, we can speculate, but we can't stand in judgement without the full array of facts. Now, just from what I've read in the article..........if CPS had already made a visit to the home, there seems to be either a problem with CPS or with what was presented to them....ie: an electrical heater. Believe me, I've got some major problems with CPS, and I've actually got a friend that now works for them and this person's stress level because he/she can't really do want he/she really thinks needs to be done is going to kill him/her!!! This friend comes from another state, law enforcement, and having worked in the juvenile division and has seen more than he/she should ever have to see and remain sane!!!!!
