Businesses will justify the credit card fee by saying they are their prices are discounted 3% when one pays with cash. When someone pays with a credit card, they will charge a price that is 3% higher. Just to go to the local SAXET or San Antonio gun shows and you can see their signs saying that.

I'll just stop using a credit card if I'm going to get charged more than someone paying with cash, check or debit. Or I'll go where they don't charge the fees for credit. I only use credit because I get paid every month in rewards cash back. I pay the bill in full every month so it's like getting paid to buy what I would buy anyway. If enough people stop going to places that charge fees and go elsewhere to use their credit cards, the merchants will start losing more money in sales than they are gaining by charging the fees, and they'll drop the fees to bring people back. It's the old supply and demand thing. It's always been a cat and mouse game between the retailer and the consumer to make a buck and save a buck. Glad the state of Texas has several controls in place to keep the consumer from getting screwed.

I will take normal credit cards if I have to, but I discourage it because what I sell is expensive and I don't want to pay the processing fee (it is a percentage of the charge). Usually, people who want to pay me with a credit card are after the free miles or rewards. They want me to pay another two hundred dollars so they can get fifty dollars worth of whatever they are collecting. I have always charged them that extra two hundred dollars. Sometimes they get mad because they are conditioned to think that I should pay extra so they can get a prize. I know the credit card companies would be mad. Americans are addicted to credit and that addiction gives the credit card companies a percentage of every dollar that is spent in America. That is an awful lot of money. We all pay higher prices to pay for credit card use, whether you use them or not.

mamajj210 - Maybe people have family or friends in those other states. Or maybe WOAI just took it off of the AP feed. Why waste time complaining when there is plenty of SPAM out there!

The only way it applies to Texans is if you use your card out of state or if you buy from an online merchant located outside of Texas who has opted to charge the surcharge. They will have to post it if they are going to charge it, so we certainly don't have to do business with them if we don't want to pay it.

You're right. It doesn't apply in Texas. So the news is irrelevant.

This article states: "Credit card surcharges are banned by law in 10 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas." So, why is this a relevant news article in San Antonio? Seems to me, this doesn't apply to anyone in Texas.
