SAN ANTONIO - It was a tearful ending to an emotional trial. The driver who plowed into a mother and her two young children in their front yard will avoid prison time - at least for now.

A jury Tuesday gave Julie Bronson probation.

Bronson's Mercedes jumped a curb back in 2009, injuring Traci Lopez and her two daughters. Her youngest daughter, Ava, is now legally blind and still undergoes medical treatment.

Bronson had five glasses of wine and took the sleep-aid "Ambien" shortly before going to bed. She claimed no memory of the crash.

Jurors could have put her away for ten years.

Both sides admitted it was a no-win situation.

“Julie has had a tough time accepting that she caused this family harm," said defense attorney Patrick Hancock.

“I believe the jury did the best it could with what what information they had. I hope that Julie Bronson is remorseful, but I question it,” said neighbor Jennifer Wiedenhoefer.

Bronson will be back in court next month for formal sentencing. The judge can still order her to serve up to six months in jail.

Next stop civil court for the victims. If you can't get justice via the criminal courts sue the pants off of her. I urge you don't settle out of court this woman pleaded guilty. I find one way to extract justice from rich people is to make them either poor or hit them in the wallet/purse so hard it hurts.

This is sad and tragic. Why on earth did the prosecution not ask her to produce the prescription bottle in court along with the warning sheets you get and have her read the warnings in court? It says plain as day DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL with this medication. So in effect she ignored the warnings and was aware of the risks involved when she drank all those glasses of wine. She is guilty and she was criminally negligent and should've gotten jail time.

I hope the judge and jury have nightmares the rest of their lives for allowing that drunk, stoned, (looks like an ex pole dancer) woman walk free. Justice was NOT served. Might as well let the firefighter walk free that ran into the policeman on 410 while he was driving drunk. No refusal policy is just a joke!! Hope Susan Reed takes note of this..the next person who runs for the DA office and if they are against drunk drivers and are going to enforce stiffer penalties they will get my vote. I bet you anything the "little blonde darlin" walked right over to the Cadillac Bar and celebrated until closing time!!!!!!!!!!

This is another shining example of "soft America." We are rapidly imploding with sympathy driven justice. Had she faced a jury in the 1950's they would have locked her up.

@Twister2, I'm sure the jury did hear more than 3 minutes of testimony but, that doesn't change the fact the this person admitted to taking Abiem, Prozac and alcohol. Like some posted below, Ambien does have "scary" side effect in which case this person knew of those and also knew that prescriptions are not to be taken with alcohol. Therefore, in my book, the jury are a bunch of IDIOTS for not handing down a stiffer sentence. Some may argue that it was a no win situation however, she gets to go back to her normal life while the child she hurt may have lifelong problems. The jury failed miserably and gave into the sob story!

i think the outrage is more towards the pattern of light punishment that's been given in SA for awhile now. The chick yesterday who got deferred adjudication for molesting a 13 year old boy, while if it were a dude he would have been labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life and spent time in jail. all the light sentencing in recent DUI cases. no wonder this town is so fkd up. we let people get away with everything

I heard this morning, probation? What kind of message are we sending to the community? No one takes responsibility for their actions when they get behind the wheel so blaming Ambien for this accident is total garbage. I think the jury and or judge need to look at this case from a personal standpoint. Would the outcome be the same if the victim was from your family? Disgusting!!!
