SAN ANTONIO – Maggie McCombs is a survivor. Maggie was shot five times outside a North Side fitness center last January and is now paralyzed from the shoulders down. But the 21-year-old says she has lots to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
“I look back on everything that happened, but I’m so thankful,” McCombs said. “I feel like there’s a reason I did survive. I believe you should live your life to the fullest, and don’t take things for granted. Take time to appreciate the smaller things in life.”
Now, McComb's friends and admirers have launched a community-wide fund-raising campaign to purchase a specially configured van to transport her bulky wheelchair and other vital gear. A goal of $50,000 has been set in hopes of acquiring the van by December 15th, just in time for Christmas.
The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation has agreed to serve as focal point for donations.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us if we’re going to get Maggie the vehicle she needs by Christmas,” said Gordon Hartman, founder of The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation. “Already – through word of mouth – $8,200 has been collected. That’s a good start, but we need to mobilize quickly to reach our goal before Christmas. We at The Foundation will contribute to help Maggie become more mobile, and we hope many others in the community will want to help, too, this holiday season.”
