SAN ANTONIO - The CPS Energy board of trustees approved a new policy Monday aimed at stopping lavish spending on meals that had enraged ratepayers.

It's the result of my investigation last February into extravagant meals by the municipally owned utility. But now I’ve uncovered more pricey perks you're paying for, including $500 a night hotel stays and first class airfare for CEO Doyle Beneby.

Recently released travel records show Beneby stays at some of the finest and most expensive hotels. His travel receipts from last year include several one night stays at swanky Four Seasons hotels in several different cities. In Philadelphia his overnight stay cost $558.  In Chicago it cost $548.  In Austin it cost $454.  During a stay in Washington DC the chief executive officer stayed at the prestigious Mayflower hotel.  The tab for one night there was $507.

The records also reveal that when Beneby flies, it's often first class. The utility says the expensive flights, many over $1000, are only booked when his busy schedule won't allow for a cheaper flight.

“Well some of those issues, I compensated the company myself,” said Beneby before Monday’s board meeting.

He’s talking about his $5,000 reimbursement to ratepayers he made after my initial investigation into his meal expenses. Beneby now indicates he may pay back more for these travel expenses. He’s also likely to be making cheaper travel plans in the future as the board looks to change the utility’s travel rules.

“That policy is actually in the cue to be reviewed and revised as we speak,” said Beneby. “So, I feel confident in, just as in meals and other policies, that we'll come out with something that comports more to public expectations.”

I also recently discovered that a new employee was recently added to Beneby's staff that has some CPS employees crying foul based on several emails I received about the hire.

The new addition to Beneby’s had been a waitress at Fleming’s Steak House where Beneby liked to dine at ratepayer’s expense before the controversy over his expenses erupted in February. Sources at the restaurant tell me Beneby would always ask for her (we’ve decided not to name the individual) to wait on him. Now the former waitress makes $60,000 a year preparing Beneby for meetings and community outreach, including scheduling his speaking engagements. The public utility never posted the job opening.

An internal email from CPS Energy’s human resources director last November says "Doyle has identified a staffing need and selected an individual for this role."

The CEO denies orchestrating the hire.

“With respect to the email, I didn't say anything. In fact, I think, as natural in any organization, anything that emanates from my office quite often has my name attached to it,” insisted Beneby. “But I cannot answer many specifics of that case, but I do know it's not unusual to hire without posting.”

The utility’s spokesperson says Beneby's assistant attended some of those Fleming’s dinners and was the one who recommended the waitress for the position. But now because of my investigation CPS has on Monday also voted unanimously to change its hiring policy.  Jobs like the one in Beneby's office will now be required to be posted in the future.

Heygoodvibe, you are entitled 2 you opinions. What is w/ you? Are u one of his underlings who have no clue to what the 10, 20, 30 thousand dollars a year sacrifice to have comfort in their homes? Some of us are struggling to survive. Why should fatcat Beneby live like a king when he works for a public utility comp? Keep up the good work WOAI4. Keep exposing all these so called public servants.

To all the Beneby lovers I'm wondering why you running to his defense. Most of us taxpayers call it as we see it. Blatant abuse of power!! Get rid of this fat cat asap. Stop the draining of the taxpayers money, now. as for you (cronyism ) politicians, you need to comply with and be sympathetic with what the ordinary citizen wants.

This man is unfit to lead a public agency. He does understand the concept of public trust. He has broken many basic rules of public service. I agree with Brian Collister speculation that he only reimbursed CPS after the other story came out. Fire this guy already. Even if we have to pa out his contract I would rather do that wonder what scandal is waiting for the city around the corner that may cost more than paying out his contract.

Wow! I admire how easy you all judge a person without knowing anything about them. All based on what you see and hear in the news. Deep inside I think you all wish you were in the "waiters" position $$$. I can care less where the CEO of CPS stays or who he hires. No, really; Is that going to make me more or less happy? I don't think so. I however pray for a positive outcome. The energy you put out, comes back to you. Don't be quick to judge.

Sounds to me like expensive meals wasn't the only thing fat boy Beneby was eating.

Her Masters in in FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY. How does the study of decomposing dead bodies make her the most qualified candidate for the job??? Her thesis was titled " color of dentine as an age indicator for Hispanic populations in San Antonio Texas". My friends worked with her at Flemings, easy enough to look up on Google. FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY! Go figure.

What sorry bunch of pathetic people work for CPS. ie. Beneby for one. That man should be further checked out along w/ other higher ups. Before this crook is let go he should pay all of what he stole from CPS. All of his cronies should also be investigated. Oh, and the "waitress" hired at his recommendation should also be investigated. Just maybe there is more to it then what Beneby is saying. Is this just CEO/manager relationship? I'm just so tired of rate increases. Now I just don't know if all of this is justified. I think that as long as Beneby remains @ CPS it will be the same old story. Beneby must think we are all PODUNKERS.

These investigations present all of CPS employees in a terrible light and that is the unfortunate part. Doyle is NOT a loyal, dedicated CPS Employee nor does he truly have the city of San Antonio's best interest at heart...he is from out of State and took the position to take what he can and fatten his pockets. I'm not saying the desire to reach your full earning potential to secure his retirement is wrong but the hypocrisy is disgusting and cannot be condoned. Doyle will preach to employees about "ethics" "trust" and "teamwork" while his actions say I'm Doyle Beneby and I do as I please! Employees are required to listen and agree to various policies regarding confidentiality, ethics, new HR policies AND we are asked to perform the job responsibilities of two sometimes three people with virtually no increase in pay while this supposed leader is hiring a waitress to perform his menial tasks at $60k a year to start with! He actually has a secretary that can handle these responsibilities but apparently she is either not qualified or does not meet his "criteria". Whether or not the waitress turned event coordinator was qualified is irrelevant because ALL positiions are required to be posted, at least that is what Management has stated for years now. Jobs will post even when the hiring department is fully aware of whom the position will be given to. Many times employees will opt to not apply for internal positions due to the fact it is well known if an individual has been performing the job role on a temporary basis the position is posted as a way to go through the motion and 99% of the time the individual will apply and will be succesful. From what I understand CPS Energy was at one time a great place to work but with 90% of upper management being from out of state and coming from the private sector and/or TOYOTA we cannot possibly ever hope to become a great place to work. Rates are low because of CPS' general workforce NOT its Executives!!!!!
