HONDO -- A young boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning this week.

Emergency crews responded to a call about carbon monoxide at a home in the 1400 block of Kollman Drive, near FM 462 early Monday.

Sources say Dr. Richard Rowland, drove his wife and three children to the hospital. One of three children, 3-year-old Alexander Rowland, died. Dr. Rowland's wife, Rebecca Rowland, was admitted for treatment and later released.

Officials say the family was asleep when fumes from a gas-powered pool/hot tub heating device that was not properly vented leaked through a soffit at the home.

This wonderful family is a great asset to our community. God has his reasons for taking Alex, and it's not our job to question it. After call, Alex belongs to Him. Enduring the loss of a child is unimaginable, and my heart goes out to the entire family. They know they are loved!

I know the father of this child he is a great doctor as well as a wonderful person. I was very heartbroken when I learned the news of his child passing. I pray for this family and I hope they find a way to cope with their sons loss. I do know after talking to him that they really want to educate everyone about having a carbon monoxide detector in there home so no one has to ever go through what they are going through. God Bless you Dr. Rowland and your family as well.

Its not gasoline...gas powered doesn't always mean gasoline. Pool heaters are powered by natural gas or propane....propane in this case. I know the child...he was a great kid and he has great parents. This was just a freak accident. May God put his hands on this family while they mourn the loss of their baby boy.

I was told if my place is all electric that I don't need one. Is that true?

Just for the record, carbon monoxide is about the same weight as air and can travel in any direction, misinformation is what kills people every year. Older homes with a lot of leaks don't usually have a problem but newer homes are so tight that you have to be very careful with anything that can produce CO, woodburning fireplaces included.

A detector saved our lives about 10 years ago, well worth the money.

Carbon monoxide is heavier than air and sinks to the floor. Install a detector if you don't have one, and plug it in the wall with a battery back-up. Prevent this from happening to anyone in your house. We will be very soon. So very tragic and heartbreaking!
