Oooh- here's some food for thought that may bedazzle some minds: DONT JAYWALK! This way if you are in the unfortunate event of a pedestrian accident, there's at least no way in hell it was your fault. There are properly marked pedestrian crossings. I'd rather walk the 50 extra feet and cross safely than be lazy and die or be seriously injured. I'm not saying crosswalks completely prevent pedestrian accidents- it would be ludicrous to assume so, but I bet they're alot safer than just walking into a random part of a road...especially a busy one, thinking you are faster than a moving motor vehicle whose driver may or may not see you.

Whether it was their fault or mine, I could not imagine the mental aguish and nightmares that are sure to follow hitting and killing a pedestrian. My heart goes out to this poor driver. I also feel sorry for the teen and his family. Tragedy all around. I have a friend who was driving home from work when an elderly man in a motorized scooter drove off the sidewalk and directly in front of her car. All witnesses advised police that there was nothing she could have done to avoid him and the determined he was either suicidal or was not in full control of his mental health. Either way...he was killed in the accident and she was a basket case for months.

TxLinda, for those of us that have been following Michael T and his posts for a while are already quite aware of how amazing he and his personal touch with the realities of life are. And, he's got a level & honest mind to boot. Of ALL the commenters on this site, he stands out as one of the best....honest, real, experienced, and not filled with a need for sympathy or gimme, gimme. Nor is he angry and asking "why me". In his own words below, he takes blame for youthful indescretion. Michael T is a TRUE man & Texan. I wish there were a multitude more of him around and out there. And Mike..........THANK YOU & GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!

To Michael T: Wow!!! You put it better than anyone! You've definitely (as they say), "Been there, done that," and got the scars to prove it. How you survived is amazing! God bless you, and I wish you the best.

My heart goes out to the family of this young man, but my heart also goes out to the driver. I'm sure it must be VERY traumatic to hit someone with your car, even though it's beyond your control. And to know that that person died has to really be a burden to bear. Thoughts and prayers to all of you. :( So unfortunate.

I will pray for his family and the driver also. In 1974 I was hit by a car while walking, this was in Austin. The driver in my case was drunk and trying to allude the police and his speed at impact was close to 65mph. I was thrown 110 feet from impact, it knock me out of my shoes, severely damaged my right leg, including damaging the nerve below the knee, fractured my neck and lower back. I spent 6 months wearing a cast after spending 21 days in Brackenridge Hospital. After 29 years I finally had to have my lower right leg amputated and I still live in moderate to sever pain. Why did I tell this story you ask? First I was jaywalking and I paid the second highest price you can pay for it. And second, had this driver not been driving drunk I would not have been hit, or maybe I would have. Case in point, stricter guidelines are needed for drunk drivers, no negotiating with them for lower fines or time, but higher fines and loss of license for 5 years on the first offense. And no provisional license for work, call a friend or take a bus/taxi. And there should also be no negotiating on jaywalking fines, and not an "up to 200.00 fine" the fine should be 200 and up. This 16 year old paid with his life, I was lucky, and those that are reading this that think it will never happen to you are only kidding yourself, it's not when if, but when.
