Reading the nutrition label helps in choosing foods that make up a healthy diet. Following a healthy diet can help reduce risk factors for some diseases. For example, too much sodium may be linked to high blood pressure in some people, and high blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke. When reading the label for the serving size, ask yourself if your serving is the same as the one on the label. If you eat double the serving size, then you need to double the nutrient and calorie values. If you eat one-half the serving size shown on the label, cut the nutrient and calorie values in half. For more information on reading the new food labels, contact a health care professional.
