The new food label calls it sodium, you call it salt or table salt. Regardless, too much sodium leads to high blood pressure in some people. On food labels the phrase 'sodium free' indicates less than five milligrams of sodium per serving, and there is no sodium chloride in the ingredients. A very low sodium label claim has thirty-five milligrams or less of sodium per serving. Low sodium is one hundred and forty milligrams of sodium or less per serving. To help put in perspective the size of a milligram, remember that one thousand milligrams equal one gram, and twenty-eight grams equal one ounce. Also, if you see a claim about high blood pressure and sodium, it means that the food is low in sodium. For more information on reading the new food labels, contact your health care provider.
