Successful training can be accomplished with older pets by using the reward system. Rewards can take the form of food, praise, or toys. If you are using food, it is a good idea to divide up a pet's daily meal into about ten small portions. When the animal has performed well, the reward will be a portion of food. Keep practicing until the pet has performed well enough to receive all portions of food. Praise is also a good reward and should take both a physical and verbal form. Stroke your pet on its sides while verbally praising it. Patting on the head is not always a good idea, as it scares some pets and shows too much dominance by the owner. When using toys or other favorite objects, only use one at a time and rotate toys often to keep them interesting. For more information, contact your veterinarian or animal care specialist.
