Fins, masks, and snorkels

Proper diving equipment should include a quality mask, snorkel, and fins. Masks come in a variety of styles and shapes, but must include the nose inside of the mask for proper equalization of air pressure. Some additional features to look for in a diving mask are: a means to seal or pinch the nostrils from outside the mask, a purge valve, a wide field of vision, low volume of air inside the mask, and visual correction. A snorkel allows a diver to breathe without lifting the head out of the water, allowing uninterrupted underwater viewing. Snorkels are also used to conserve air at the surface when scuba diving. When going underwater for closer examination of an object, water in the snorkel can be cleared easily upon return to the surface. Look for comfort, fit, and breathing ease when you buy a snorkel. Fins allow for effective and hands-free propulsion when diving. Your fins should be bought based on their size and rigidity. The larger and more rigid it is, the more strength necessary to use the fin. You will also want to note the difference between open heel adjustable fins and full-foot fins. If your fins require the use of boots, you will want to purchase both at the same time, so you can ensure proper fit. Ask your scuba diving instructor or professional diving retailer for more information concerning fins, masks, and snorkels.
