If natural gas is available in your area and you are interested in converting to it, consult a plumber or the local gas company. If you do not have gas service lines in your home, the gas company will need to install them. Once the service lines are installed, you, a plumber, or the gas company must route gas pipes to the appliances to be converted. If your current appliances are propane, converting to natural gas is easy. Small modifications are necessary and are inexpensive. If your current appliances are oil burning, conversion kits are required and may cost more. Before converting oil-burning appliances, consider their age, condition, and useful life expectancy in order to determine if replacement will be more cost efficient. If your appliances are electric, they cannot be converted and must be replaced. A cost efficient way to convert to natural gas may be to wait until each appliance needs to be replaced, and replace it with natural gas. Installing natural gas service and routing gas lines in your home incurs costs. Compare this cost to the possible savings of natural gas use. Also consider the resale value of your current appliances, conversion costs of propane or oil appliances, and the purchase price for gas appliances, to determine if converting is economical. For more information on converting to natural gas, consult a plumber or your local natural gas company.
