Most doctors advise you not to be concerned about infertility unless you've been trying for at least one year. You should attempt to become pregnant for about 12 menstrual cycles, focusing your efforts around the time of ovulation. Normally, ovulation occurs around the middle of your cycle. If you've had unprotected intercourse for a year around the time of ovulation, you might need to seek help. Remember fertility decreases with age, so the older you are, the more time you should allow. There are a few exceptions to waiting a year. If you're over 30 years old, have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, painful periods, miscarriage, or irregular cycles, or if your partner has a known low sperm count, you may want to seek help sooner.
